Refrigerator magnets, on the move January 17, 2013

I’ve had this happy magnet for ages. It’s part of a whole gang of smiley (and not-so-smiley) faces that lives on my refrigerator.
The gang isn’t exclusive — these smileys do pal around with other smileys, including a different style of “cool” smiley, some of the smiley clips I’ve featured on the blog before, and — not in this photo, but in the vicinity — a smiley face for the state of Wisconsin, where we lived for a few years.
But lately, this particular gang of smileys has been commuting to work: they’re serving double-duty on my dishwasher. I use the traditional smiley when the dishes are clean, the frown when the dishes are dirty, and, once, the mischievous leer when I ran a cleanse cycle on the empty dishwasher.

NOTE: I get a LOT of questions about this magnet. Unfortunately, it no longer works, and I don’t know how to fix it. (I’ve tried.) I also don’t know where to find another one. I wish you all luck in tracking down versions for yourselves!
Not exactly sure where I picked this up, but I love it. When I’m in the kitchen making dinner — or breakfast, or just grabbing a snack — I like to push the “nose” on this thing. Yeah, the music is tinny and electronic and maybe a little grating, but it’s such a happy song! Makes me smile, every time. š

You’ll notice these are empty. I’m supposed to tuck coupons andĀ receiptsĀ andĀ recipesĀ and notes from my wife (yes, milk is on the list) into these little clips, but I don’t. 1) We have a LOAD of clips andĀ magnetsĀ and pouches for storing all those things, and they’re all on other parts of the fridge. And 2) I like to leave these happy (and one surprised) guys alone, no work required — I let them just hang out on the fridge and enjoy themselves. (And 2.5, I keep my grocery list on my iPod.)
Actually, my fridge is COVERED in smiley magnets, including a very cool homemade one, and a few of those smileys do hold up some ads and sticker sheets and business cards. But, lest I overwhelm you, I’ll save those smileys for other posts.
I am curious, though: what’s got the second smiley face so shocked? Whatever it is, I think the winky face had something to do with it. And the dude in the sunglasses isn’t telling anyone…. š
