Okay, I admit it: I’m a fan of Annie.

So sue me.

But how can you not love songs like this?

"Creepy clown face." Submitted by Gromyt D Hodum.

I got this from a friend who, online, goes by the name Gromyt D Hodum. Which is awesome. But apparently she thought this dead-eyed little smiley face is a little less than awesome! “Creepy clown face that appeared at work,” she wrote when she posted this on Facebook. “Can’t Sleep, Clowns Will Eat Me.”

Ha! I love that she’s picked up on the bright red pushpin as a “clown nose,” and the X-eyes as resembling the classic + sign clown make-up, like this:

But I don’t think we have anything to fear from that hand-drawn happy face. But don’t X-eyes mean that guy is out for the count? Or dead?

Maybe we should be scared after all….

Nah. Just keep smiling! 🙂

"Happy Nails" salon sign. Rockwall, TX, July 2010.

When I saw this sign in Rockwall, TX last summer, I was happy just to grab the photo of the big yellow smiley face. But since then I’ve been wondering: just what do “happy” nails look like?

I got my answer this summer, when my good friend Crystal sent me a photo of her fingernail*:

* (just to clarify: Crystal doesn’t live in Rockwall and didn’t get her nails done at Happy Nails. But her nail does look happy!)

Jeep grill. Submitted by Beth D.

My friend Beth, who lives in Georgia, spotted this grinning Jeep on the road behind her and snapped this photo just for us! “I like the imperfection of the smile,” she wrote — “so fitting on the jeep, I think.”

Me too! It’s a delightfully crooked grin, more of a “howdy” than a “hello,” which is perfect.

Thanks, Beth!

Here’s a close-up of the smiley:

My coffee burner. Photo taken August 2011.

If you’re new to this blog, I should tell you now that I love coffee. If you’re a long-time reader, I should tell you now that this is not the last coffee-related smiley you’re ever going to see. What can I say? Coffee makes me smile.

Even when spills over the pot and burns on the hotplate. Which, apparently, makes the hotplate smile, too. 🙂

Smile in prayer September 11, 2011

"Smile in prayer." My own drawing, in Sharpie.

This blog project is supposed to be about injecting a little happiness into the world.  We do it because the world could always use a little more happiness, a few more reasons to smile.

Days like today — the 10th anniversary of truly horrifying terrorist attacks in the US — make it hard to smile, but they also remind us how important smiling can be.

Today, I offer only the simplest of smiley faces, a quiet, meditative sketch, a smile of the spirit.

But you have plenty more smiles to find:

Look to a friend or a loved one and find your smile there.

Remember the people you’ve lost, but remember them smiling.

Find your nearest emergency service person — a police officer, a fire fighter, a paramedic — and thank them, and see them smile in return.

Find others who serve and help us:  clergy, doctors, librarians, military personnel, postal workers, teachers, and so on.  Thank them, too.

Go outside and offer others your own smile.

Today is for remembering a lot of things, but we should never be forced to remember hatred or to dwell in sorrow.  And we should always remember the importance of spreading joy.

Syrup smiley on a pancake. Photo taken February 2011.

I really love pancakes. They make me think of childhood, my father at the griddle, my mother at the dining table, the smell of the batter mixing with the aroma of scrambled eggs, orange juice, and rich coffee, cartoons on the television and me, my sister, and my brother sprawled in the living room.

Pancakes make me happy.

Animals need happiness, too!

My mother-in-law, the Great Enabler, sent me this page from a recent issue of People magazine. The article is about the ways abused or neglected animals and traumatized children can help each other emotionally deal with their pasts. It’s a beautiful story, and what better lead photo than a giant, horse-sized ball with smiley face!

Clay fridge magnet, made by Zoey S.

Last week, I posted a couple of clay smileys my nephew Aidan made, because it was his birthday. This week, it was my niece Zoey’s birthday, so here is her contribution: this adorable little refrigerator magnet! Thanks, Zoey! And happy birthday! 🙂
