I was browsing Facebook shortly after Christmas and I spotted this plywood stencil in a friend’s photos:

At least, I'm assuming this is some kind of stencil. Submitted by Monica D.

At least, I’m assuming this is some kind of stencil. Submitted by Monica D.

This is in Portland, “Where even the trash is happy,” according to my friend Monica. I told her I had to steal it for my blog, and she was happy to let me have it!

If I’d been quicker — by which I mean, if I hadn’t been slumping around in sweatpants feeling lazy from post-holiday food indulgences — I would have jumped in the car and tried to grab this off the street. But alas, it didn’t happen.

I will, however, keep an eye out for wherever this thing got painted onto a street or a building. Surely it won’t be that hard to find? πŸ™‚

Graffito on electric box, Sandy River delta, Portland, OR.

A couple of weeks ago, Jennifer and I spent an afternoon hanging out on the wide, gritty bank of the Sandy River delta, where the Sandy runs into the Columbia River. It was a gorgeous late-summer day to begin with, but you can imagine how much happier I felt when we spotted this graffito on the path out to the riverbank.! πŸ™‚

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I were walking around in our neighborhood in Portland when Jennifer spotted this giant…. snowman?… on the sidewalk.

A snowman in the summer?

We looked at it for quite a while, from several different angles, but we couldn’t decide if that’s what he was supposed to be, or if he maybe was just a pleasantly rotund man.

Whatever the case, he’s certainly is happy! πŸ™‚

Sunshine chalk drawing. Portland, OR.

We’ve had a long week of bright, sunny days — and thermometer-bursting heat, which is very rare in Portland, especially this mild summer! — so it was particularly appropriate that I spotted this smiling, shining sun on a sidewalk in downtown Portland last Monday. πŸ™‚

The other day, I stepped out of my building’s front door and started walking down the street to a birthday party for my Buddhism teacher, and I spotted this on the sidewalk.

It was the smiley that got me — makes me happy every time. πŸ™‚

(Also, my wife loves the squiggly exclamation marks on each side.)

“Mad Dog” graffito. NE Portland, OR.

The other day I was making a quick trip to our local public library, which I love doing on foot because there’s a lovely tree-shaded pedestrian lane that extends from our neighborhood park through a small residential area to the library (and cafe, and our vet’s office, and the Whole Foods store — I love where we live).

On the way home, my wife called, so I stopped at a bench along the lane, and when I sat down to talk on the phone, I found this smiley graffito grinning up at me! πŸ™‚

I love happy surprises.

Graffiti on a concrete divider in Vienna. November 2009.

Some of my favorite smileys are graffiti smileys. Because if you’re going to deface property, you might as well face the property. And make people happy in the process.

Also, if you’ve followed this blog for long, you’ve probably noticed that Vienna comes up a lot. That’s partly because the whole idea for this blog really took shape while we were in Vienna. But judging from the multitude of smiley graffiti (and signs, and artwork) I spotted there, Vienna must just be a really happy city. πŸ™‚

"Happiness is greater than money": Graffiti in downtown Portland, OR, October 2011.

Back in October, my wife and I were walking around downtown, checking out some art and, because we couldn’t really afford to do any real shopping, we were doing a little casual window shopping. And then we spotted this on one of the windows! This wasΒ in the early days ofΒ Portland’s Occupy movement, which is likely why it turned up on on the window, but the sentiment that happiness is greater than money is timeless and apolitical, and I wholeheartedly endorse it! πŸ™‚

Sometimes graffiti can be mean:

But sometimes, someone will come along and make it beautiful:

And when I see that happen, it always makes me smile:

Smiley graffiti on a dumpster. Photo taken in Portland, OR.

I missed Monday’s post, happy readers, because I’ve been in the process of moving into a new apartment. In fact, on Monday, I was checking out our new place for the first time. And I swear I’m not the one who put it there, but I found this smiley on our dumpster outside. Which means we’ve definitely moved to the right place! πŸ™‚
