Smiley sign on a Texas highway. Photo taken August 2012.

As we wrap up our Texas trip, I have to share this smiley sign for a gas station on a Texas highway. It’s not the first such sign I’ve seen in Texas, and big as this state is, there are bound to be dozens — or hundreds — more, so keep your eyes peeled, Texans! 🙂

Water bottle. From my nephew Aidan’s collection.

Today was my nephew Aidan’s and niece Zoey’s first day of school. Yesterday, when they were showing me their first-day outfits, Aidan brought me his water bottle, too. 🙂

Today, little Zoey said she started her day with play dough. I asked her what she made, and she told me she made two smileys! Maybe later this week I’ll get to post photos of those, too.

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I were walking around in our neighborhood in Portland when Jennifer spotted this giant…. snowman?… on the sidewalk.

A snowman in the summer?

We looked at it for quite a while, from several different angles, but we couldn’t decide if that’s what he was supposed to be, or if he maybe was just a pleasantly rotund man.

Whatever the case, he’s certainly is happy! 🙂

Refrigerator magnets. At Kagyu Changchub Chuling Buddhist center, Portland, OR.

Here’s a riddle: Am I so happy because I’m a Buddhist? Or am I a Buddhist because I’m so happy?

Either way, I am always delighted when, between sitting meditation and oral teachings, I slip into my Buddhist center‘s kitchen for a cup of tea and find that someone has arranged the refrigerator magnets into a smiley face!

We Buddhists do love to smile! 🙂

Scruffy Jeep spare tire smiley. In Pt. Aransas, TX. Submitted by Sara S.

My sister enjoyed a girls’ weekend with her pals down on the Texas coast a short while ago, and in the midst of all their fun, she thought to stop in a parking lot and snap this photo (including a friend of hers), just for me!

Thanks, Sara! 🙂

Earlier this afternoon, I was chatting with my upstairs neighbor about his music (he records under the name Laugh at Linus), and when we started talking about his love of Brian Wilson’s work with the Beach Boys, his whipped out this:

The SMiLE Sessions, by the Beach Boys.

It’s the massive, super-awesome, utterly LOADED box set release of the Beach Boys’ mysterious, long-awaited SMiLE album. (Not to be confused with the inferior replacement for what this album was supposed to be, Smiley Smile.)

Just how huge is this box set? This huge:

This is the Amazon image of the unpacked awesomeness.

And this thing isn’t just called SMiLE — it’s absolutely covered in smileys! I count at least eight in the shop window, and the bunting along the top is really just a whole row of smileys!

Good vibrations, indeed!

Sunshine chalk drawing. Portland, OR.

We’ve had a long week of bright, sunny days — and thermometer-bursting heat, which is very rare in Portland, especially this mild summer! — so it was particularly appropriate that I spotted this smiling, shining sun on a sidewalk in downtown Portland last Monday. 🙂

Smiley Olympic medals August 2, 2012

I could easily get patriotic with this post, because the US has a lot to be proud of in these Olympic Games. But the games have been outstanding across the board so far, in all the sports and all the countries. The displays of athleticism and sportsmanship have been phenomenal to behold, and I have frequently found myself cheering on countries I’ve never even been to.

So let me congratulate ALL the medal winners — Olympians of the world, here’s to you!
