The flyer my wife did for a smiley face display--using items from my collection--in the Lewisville Public Library in Lewisville, TX. She later created a similar display in the Karrmann Library at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. You can read the text of her flyer by clicking the "Page 2" link below.

Today is World Smile Day!

Founded in 1999 by Harvey Ball, who in 1963 invented the image we now know and celebrate as the iconic Smiley Face, World Smile Day occurs every year on the first Friday of October. (As luck–and calendar math–would have it, the first World Smile Day also occurred on October 1.)  According to World Smile Day’s website, Ball, “thought that we, all of us, should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world.  The smiley face knows no politics, no geography and no religion.  Harvey’s idea was that for at least one day each year, neither should we.”

Amen to that.

So smile, everyone!  And happy celebrating!
