Just in time for the end of the world, most of our holiday cards have arrived at their destinations, bringing seasonal cheer and warm wishes for our last hours on Earth….

Wait. I’m confusing Christmas with the Mayan apocalypse.

Let me start over….

Holiday cards are a team effort in the Smiley household, with my wife taking the role of addresser (she has better penmanship) while I check the addresses (I have the iPod). And then we sign each card — and, for friends and family, I sometimes doodle this little Santa smiley on the card, as well!

Santa smiley. My doodle in Sharpie.

Happy holidays, everybody! See you all back here on Monday! (No, really — I promise….)

For the children in Connecticut. For the shoppers in Oregon. For everyone everywhere. December 14, 2012

“Smile in prayer.” My own drawing, in Sharpie.

It is hard to smile when, in the space of a week, we’ve seen two mass shootings, one just a dozen miles from my house here in Oregon and the other, today, in kindergarten classrooms in Connecticut. People got out of those situations alive, and that’s worth smiling about. But people died — children died — and that makes smiling, for any reason, very, very difficult.

But we need to smile for each other. It isn’t a happy smile. It’s a soft, sad smile, but it’s a smile nonetheless. It’s our reassurance to each other that we are better than this, that we will be there for each other in times of need. And it’s a promise that we will overcome the violence in our lives through love and mutual happiness.

In the meantime, here’s a sad, heartbroken but hopefully heartmeanding smile, and a hug, to everyone, everywhere.

Tiny jack-o-lantern. For Halloween 2012.

I really, really LOVE Halloween. The ghouls, the goblins, the demons, the clowns. (That list gets scarier as you read it.) And, of course, the fun of dressing up andĀ carvingĀ pumpkins. In our small apartment, though, I tend to stick to tiny pumpkins my wife and I draw on with markers. Not exactly the traditional scary face lighting the darkness to keep the evil spirits at bay, but they’re still fun to make.

And yes, I always do a scary face, because it is Halloween. But I also do a smiling pumpkin, too, because we’re supposed to be having fun! šŸ™‚

Refrigerator magnets. At Kagyu Changchub Chuling Buddhist center, Portland, OR.

Here’s a riddle: Am I so happy because I’m a Buddhist? Or am I a Buddhist because I’m so happy?

Either way, I am always delighted when, between sitting meditation and oral teachings, I slip into my Buddhist center‘s kitchen for a cup of tea and find that someone has arranged theĀ refrigeratorĀ magnets into a smiley face!

We Buddhists do love to smile! šŸ™‚

The other day, my wife and I got a couple of Frosties from Wendy’s, but we only at half and put the rest in the freezer for later. I needed to label them so we’d remember whose was whose, so I covered them in plastic wrap and used a Sharpie on the plastic.

This was my wife’s:

And this was mine:

Of course. šŸ™‚

It’s been two weeks of thanks here at Smile!, and for that I am so, so grateful.

Hand-drawn smiley in a thank you card. By Aryana.

This buck-toothed happy guy was drawn inside a card from another of my tutees, this one an exceptionally intelligent and insightful young woman named Aryana, who is graduating high school in the next few weeks and has already been accepted into a very good university.Ā Working with her this past year has been one of the greatĀ privilegesĀ of my academic career, and I am honored to get thanks Ā from so bright a student.

Have a terrific graduation and a wonderful summer, Aryana! And then go and rock university. The academic world needs a scholar like you. šŸ™‚
